Exercise Treadmills Can Make The Difference Between Fit And Fat

If you love to walk or run outdoors, and the weather is always accomodating where you live, and you never have a problem finding the time to fit regular outdoor workouts into your schedule, you may not understand why anyone would want to own their own exercise treadmill. But many people find trying to fit an outdoor workout into their busy schedule, while allowing for rain, snow, excessive cold or heat, darkness and all the other challenges that mother nature can throw at us is challenging to say the least. Because these people are in the majority, exercise treadmills have become a big seller in the fitness market.

In addition to allowing exercisers to avoid the vagaries of the weather, there are other advantages to using a treadmill. Many of them have special belts that soften the impact of the user's foot as it stikes the belt, so some people that love to run but get overuse injuries from pounding the pavement find that treadmills still allow them to attain that runner's high.

Also, many treadmills these days can be programmed to run through specific workouts. While some days you would probably just like to go out and run through the woods, speeding up or slowing down as you feel like it (called 'fartlek' or speedplay by Swedish runners), there's also something to be said for planning out a specific workout and sticking to it while striving to get a little better at it over time. These programs are great for doing this.

And to go in an altogether opposite direction, if you feel like totally disassociating with your workout and the effort it takes, you may want to grab your ipod and head out the door. But running with headphones is extremely dangerous, both in relation to the danger from vehicular traffic, and the possibility of attack by a ne'er do well. If you're at home with your treadmill, in addition to listening to music, you can watch the tv show you recorded last night or your favorite movie DVD without fear.

As far as which treadmill to buy, well, that's a subject for another article. However, one truism is that, if you intend to run, plan on spending at least a thousand dollars, and that's the very rock bottom price. Really, a more realistic figure is fifteen hundred and up. Now if your workouts are mostly of the walking variety, then you may be able to get away with a five hundred dollar investment if you do your homework and investigate the purchase thoroughtly.

You can probably find the best deals on exercise equipment by shopping online, and if you do your research well, chances are you'll be happy with this type of purchase. That's the way I've bought most of my stuff, and I'm satisfied. But, should you be one of those lucky people who has a large exercise equipment store that offers good prices located near you, pay them a visit and see what they can do for you. Being able to try the equipment out, see how it fits you, how much noise it makes, and how much room it takes up can certainly be instrumental in making the right exercise treadmill purchase for your situation.
