Abdominal Exercise Equipment - Spend The Money On Some Healthy Natural Foods Instead

What type of abdominal exercise equipment should you buy if you want to get a flat tummy or six-pack abs? It says something about our consumption-oriented society that whenever someone wants to achieve something, the first question they ask is what they can buy to make it happen. However, it's really not necessary to buy anything to get a good workout for your ab muscles. What is required is a little good old fashioned hard work - but make it smart work, because there's no point in working any harder than necessary.

Every commercial gym will have at least one, and usually a number of, abdominal machines. While it would certainly behoove you to take advantage of this specialized fitness equipment if you already have a gym membership, you don't need to join up just to have access to professional quality equipment. You can work your abs just as hard at home as you can in any fitness club.

Similarly, it seems that one thing is constant in the world of infomercials - and that is that any time you watch tv in the overnight hours, you'll see at least one ad for a stomach exercise machine - usually more than one. However, it's not necessary to purchase one of these machines to get results. Be aware that the fitness models in these commercials didn't get their abs, or the rest of their bodies, by using the apparatus in question. And the fine print that appears at the bottom of the screen while the 'ordinary people' tell you about the results they got when using the device will let you know that they also followed a specific diet and engaged in an additional exercise program. You can do this yourself, and you don't need to buy the machine to learn of a good diet and exercise program. Just do some research on the web.

Which is not to say that all abdominal fitness equipment advertised on TV is worthless. Some do have value, in making an exercise more comfortable by supporting the user's neck, or raising him off the ground, or providing a padded surface to lie on - but there are certain ab exercises that you can do that get better results than any infomercial device invented to date. Check out the article on this site about the best ab exercises to learn what they are.

During the research study mentioned in that article, the researchers also tested some abdominal exercise equipment. One piece of infomercial equipment was basically useless, and two others were only about as effective as the traditional ab crunch. They found the most useful piece of ab exercise equipment to be an everday exercise ball (also called Swiss ball).

One other thing to keep in mind is that if you have excess fat around your middle, no abdominal exercise equipment will take it off. However, there is one particular ab exercise that will spot reduce the fat on your stomach. To perform it, sit at the dinner table, and after eating a dinner of healthy natural foods, press your hands against the table and push the chair back. Then stand up and walk away :-)

Seriously, while ab exercises can build the muscles around your midsection, no one will be able to see them if they're covered in a layer of fat, and spot reduction of fat around the abs is impossible (as it is for all other areas of your body).Bodyfat needs to be removed over the whole body through a combination of a healthy diet, aerobic exercise (steady state or interval) and strength training (which will build muscle that will increase your body's fat-burning capacity around the clock).

So forget about the miracle abdominal exercise equipment and just work hard at some proven ab exercises while getting all the fat-reducing facets of diet and exercise right, and you'll get as close to seeing six-pack abs as your genetics will allow.
